Navigating Grief Conversations with Grace – Guest on the Fierce Calling Podcast with Doris Swift

A Tender Conversation on the Fierce Calling Podcast

I had the honor of being a guest on the Fierce Calling Podcast with my good friend Doris Swift.

This conversation was tender, honest, and deeply meaningful. Doris and I talked about what it looks like to navigate grief conversations, honor precious memories, and find purpose through some of life’s deepest losses.

After Annie passed away in 2023, I began to understand in a much deeper way how hard it can be for people to know what to say to someone who is grieving. I also understood how painful silence can feel when you are already carrying so much loss.

Out of that place, I created Beyond “I Don’t Know What to Say” Grief Cards, a resource designed to help spark meaningful conversations and keep memories of loved ones alive.

When Words Feel Hard to Find

Grief can make people uncomfortable.

Sometimes those who are grieving do not know how to explain what they need. And sometimes the people who love them stay quiet because they are afraid of saying the wrong thing.

But grief should not have to be carried in silence.

Open communication, even through simple questions, can bring comfort in ways we may not realize. Sometimes asking, “What has this week been like for you?” opens a much gentler door than simply asking, “How are you?”

Whether you are walking through grief or supporting someone who is, this episode offers encouragement, practical tools, and a powerful reminder that our purpose in Christ is eternal.

Episode Highlights and Key Takeaways

Grief should not be silent.

Simple, honest questions can create space for someone who is mourning to feel seen, heard, and remembered.

Everyone’s grieving journey is unique:

No two people carry loss in exactly the same way. Grief changes so much, and each person’s story deserves to be met with tenderness and care.

Support can be simple and brave.

Doris and I discuss different ways people can show up for someone who is grieving, even when they do not know exactly what to say.

Grief is complicated. Communication shouldn’t have to be.

Sometimes love sounds like a thoughtful question and a willingness to listen.

A Reminder of Eternal Purpose

One of the powerful reminders in this conversation is that grief may change our roles, our rhythms, our relationships, and the way life looks, but it does not erase our God-given purpose.

Our Roles in life will change and end, but our purpose is eternal.

Whether you are walking through grief yourself or supporting someone who is, I pray this episode encourages you, gives you practical tools, and reminds you that you do not have to have perfect words to offer meaningful support.
